Hambright Elementary School students had front-row seats Friday as “Leo,” a Lancaster City Police Department K9 dog, put on a show on the sunny grounds of the school.
Leo visited Hambright with his handler, Officer Ryan Hockley, who talked about how he and Leo interact on the beat in Lancaster city. Hockley demonstrated how the highly trained German shepherd uses his acute sense of smell to sniff out drugs and can attack a “bad guy” — in this case a fellow police officer in a “bite suit” — within seconds upon command.
Hockley responded to a bevy of questions from the students, who had an opportunity to pet Leo after the demonstration.
Hockley is the husband of Hambright fifth-grade teacher Jocelyn Hockley. When Leo is “off duty,” he lives with the Hockleys and their two cats.
