Hundreds of student athletes, coaches and Comets fans turned out Thursday for the 13th annual Fall Kickoff Classic.
In a twist from past years, the event raised money for ALS research as coaches from every fall sport — along with some special guests — accepted the Ice Bucket Challenge and got drenched with icy cold water.
Prior to the on-field activities, students and staff sold nearly 900 chicken dinners to raise funds for senior athletic scholarships. PM athletic director Jeff Roth introduced the teams and head coaches, including four who are new this year– Carli Brill, girls’ soccer; Paul Taylor, boys’ soccer; Alison Fetter, girls’ tennis; and Eric Koehler, golf.
Those newbies got a cold introduction as they participated in the Ice Bucket Challenge with their fellow coaches. They had to answer a Penn Manor sports trivia question. If they got it wrong, they were drenched with two buckets of ice water instead of one.
Also participating were two parents with strong ties to Penn Manor athletics — Pat Kline and Mike Deberdine — superintendent Mike Leichliter and Jeff Roth. Check the slideshow to see if you can identify the “victims.”
Thanks to everyone who turned out. It was a great day to be a Comet!
