Penn Manor honors senior student athletes

More than 60 Penn Manor High School student athletes were honored May 11 during the Senior Sports Awards Social in the high school cafeteria.

The top athletic awards went to Cassie Kline and Ashton Leschke, recipients of the All-Around Male and Female Athlete awards, and Katina Jones and Griffin Sangrey, who received the Outstanding Male and Female Athlete awards.

Cassie Kline was a captain and leader on Penn Manor’s league and state championship field hockey team and also participated in track this year.  She was named first-team All State and first-team All American in field hockey.  Cassie raised more than $1,000 for families in need while serving on the homecoming court and helped the field hockey team raise more than $10,000 for cancer research in her four years at Penn Manor. She will continue her education at Penn State University and play on PSU’s nationally recognized field hockey team.

Ashton Leschke was a captain of both the Penn Manor football team and the league championship wrestling team.  He was an L-L League Champion in wrestling, an All Star in football and an Academic All-Star in both football and wrestling.  Ashton is very involved in his church and has helped out with youth camps for future Penn Manor athletes. He will be attending Stevenson University, where he will play football.

Katina Jones was the three-time Lancaster-Lebanon League singles tennis champion and won her first District III singles championship this year. Katina also participated in the PIAA state singles championship for three years and ranks as one of the top tennis players in the history of Penn Manor.  She will be attending West Chester University, where she will play tennis.

Griffin Sangrey has developed into the best all-around volleyball player in Penn Manor history.  His quiet demeanor, strong work ethic and competitive fire have led the volleyball team to a 14-3 record and a top ranking in the state. Griffin is looked to by his teammates to make big plays in key situations.  He will be attending St. Francis University, where he will play volleyball.

Also honored May 11 was Comets wrestling coach Mike Fowler, named Penn Manor Coach of the Year. Fowler led the team to a 15-4 record and was named the Lancaster-Lebanon League Section I Coach of the Year.
