Nearly 400 Penn Manor sixth-graders converged on the high school athletic fields Tuesday for Penn Manor’s first Sixth Grade Field Day.
The students were divided into two teams — Blazing Blue (Hambright, Martic, Conestoga and Letort elementary schools) and Pure Gold (Central Manor, Eshleman and Pequea) — that competed against each other in a variety of events. Competitions included 50-, 100- and 400-meter runs, football/softball throw accuracy and distance competitions, the long jump and broad jump and 4 x 100 team relay races.
In between competitions, students played Capture the Flag, Run for Your Life and volleyball and visited stations where high school students and coaches explained their varsity sports and gave the youngsters a chance to try out field hockey, wrestling, soccer, football, volleyball and other sports.
The daylong event, organized by physical education teacher Jason Binkley, ended with Hambright winning the team relay race.
“The students displayed great effort and sportsmanship,” Binkley said. “It was a lot of fun to watch.”
